Combine lively Byron Bay with a rainforest walk, the surfing hotspot of Cabarita, and the hinterland village of Bangalow on a scenic day trip from Brisbane or the Gold Coast. Travel the scenic Tweed Valley route via north and the northern New South Wales hinterlands. You will have plenty of free time to explore the famous beaches, lighthouse and luxury boutiques of Byron Bay.Byron Bay is less than a two hour drive from Brisbane or one hour from the Gold Coast, passing through scenic coastal and rural townships along the way.
The first stop is the northern beach villages of Pottsville and Hastings Point before arriving at Cabarita Beach - a local mecca for surfers. Stop to stretch your legs and explore the headland with its unique coastal rainforest. Then travel to Bangalow, a charming historical town in the hinterland with trendy shops and cafes. You'll have plenty of time to browse the galleries and shops or to relax with a cup of coffee at a cafe.
Get a birds-eye view of Byron and the iconic lighthouse, as you drive across the mountains before reaching Byron Bay late in the morning. Your guide will give you an overview of the town you will have at least two hours at your leisure. Explore the township, take a swim at the beach or enjoy the stylish boutiques. Mid afternoon visit Cape Byron lighthouse and Watego’s Beach.
Later in the afternoon, travel back to the Gold Coast or Brisbane where your tour will end.

When you arrive at O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, you’ll be enchanted by the lush surroundings and the calls of native birds including the rare Alberts Lyrebird, Bowerbirds, Wedge Tailed Eagles, plus the beautiful King Parrots in their hundreds.
You’ll have about two and a half hours at O’Reilly’s and are free to participate in the rainforest activities like bird-feeding, bushwalking and the ever-popular treetop canopy walk, as well as time to enjoy lunch at the cafe (if option selected).
The treetop canopy walk is a series of nine suspension bridges approximately 45 feet (16 meters) above the ground. As you stroll through the treetops, your guide will accompany you, providing information about the beautiful trees, vines, flowers, birds and wildlife that make up the rainforest.
From Mount Tamborine, you can also see fantastic views of the rainforest and on a clear day the shimmer of the Pacific Ocean. On the journey back down the mountain, you will stop an alpaca farm where you can pet and take photos of the alpacas. Your Moreton Island 4WD tour will take you along Middle Road passing through thick eucalyptus forest, featuring beautiful grass trees up to 250 years old, before reaching 'the Desert', home of sand boarding on Moreton Island.
Sand boarding is an awesome, fun, high-adrenalin activity. Speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour can be reached. For those who prefer not to snorkel, kayaking around the Tangalooma Shipwrecks is a fantastic alternative. See the magnificent shipwrecks from above the water for a completely different outlook of Moreton Bay and its spectacular scenery.
